| The things we see, feel, and experience in dreams often seem very real. Some dreams are
strange and leave us wondering what they were all about. Since ancient times people have been
fascinated by dreams and have tried to figure out their meanings. In ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt,
people considered dreams to be predictions about the future. They looked to them for warnings and
advice. In ancient China and Mexico, people believed that the soul actually left the body and went to
visit a dream world when they slept. Nowadays there are many more theories that try to explain why we
have dreams and what they mean. Here are just a few.
In one popular theory developed by
Sigmund Freud, it is believed that dreams are filled with symbolism. Freud claimed that dreams
revealed parts of our unconscious minds, or thoughts we’re not aware of. According to this
theory, people dream about the things they’re not allowed to do in everyday life. Dreaming is a
way to release the thoughts and desires we hold back during the day.
Francis Crick and Graeme
Mitchinson offered a different view on the purpose of dreams. They believed that we dream in order to
organize all the information that we have received during the day. They proposed that when we
dream,we store thoughts and memories that are useful to us and get rid of the ones that aren’t.
Carl Jung, a psychologist, developed another theory. Like Freud, Jung also believed that
dreams were expressions of the unconscious. He thought that dreams contained symbols with meanings,
but that the symbols represented different things to different people. In order to interpret a dream,
Jung considered an individual’s personal relationships with the people and things in the
dream. | | | | | Example: a The images in
